About Us

Overview

An online academy today, a hybrid virtual and physical learning ecosystem in uMbumbulu tomorrow.

The Welisa Academy is an online pioneering educational initiative designed to transform how knowledge is accessed and experienced. Unlike conventional digital platforms, the Academy delivers live and pre-recorded lessons, expert-led master classes, and critical discussion podcasts that integrate the seven liberal arts, progressive pedagogies, and emancipatory approaches.

The Academy operates under the auspices of Welisa Projects, NPC, a not-for-profit company committed to revolutionising education and development in under-served communities.

A hybrid model

Virtual and physical, mutually reinforcing

In addition to its robust online presence, the Welisa Academy is being developed as a hybrid educational model that brings together mutually reinforcing virtual and physical learning platforms. While the digital platform enables broad access across geographic boundaries, the physical platform—currently under construction in uMbumbulu, south-west of Durban – will serve as a grounded learning hub for in-person engagement, community-based scholarship, and embodied pedagogical practice. This physical site will house a library, an art studio and gallery, and a fully equipped audio-visual studio, creating an integrated environment for intellectual inquiry, creative expression, and knowledge production.

Our primary audience

Rural communities first

Rural communities face persistent challenges in accessing quality, emancipatory education, including limited infrastructure, inadequate resourcing, historical marginalisation, and curricula that often fail to speak to their lived realities. These constraints frequently reproduce inequality and restrict opportunities for critical, transformative learning. The Welisa Academy positions rural communities as its primary audience, intentionally designing its content, methods, and platforms to expand access to intellectually rigorous, socially responsive, and liberatory education that empowers both in-school and out-of-school individuals to engage critically with their worlds.
